Ways of Understanding and Managing ADHD Symptoms as an Adult

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, more commonly known as ADHD, is a mental disorder that is characterized by problems with focus, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.  ADHD is a common disorder that is predominantly diagnosed in children.  However, many adults struggle with ADHD symptoms on a daily basis without ever being diagnosed. ADHD can be a challenge to manage at any age, but when you’re an adult, the stakes are higher. You have more responsibilities and must juggle more tasks than ever before.

The truth is, living with ADHD as an adult is not easy. It can be challenging to focus on priorities, stay organized, and manage time effectively.  ADHD symptoms can range from mild to severe, and they can affect different people in different ways. The disorder can cause problems with focus, organization, and time management. Adults with ADHD may also struggle with impulsiveness and hyperactivity.

While medication is often the go-to treatment for ADHD, it’s not the only option.  Some people find that lifestyle changes, such as getting more exercise, eating a healthy diet, and getting enough sleep, help to control their ADHD symptoms. Some people find that eliminating certain foods or food additives from their diet helps them to better control their ADHD symptoms.  Others find that using strategies such as positive reinforcement, problem-solving therapy, or meditation can be helpful.

One of the most common non-medication treatments for ADHD is therapy. There are a number of different types of therapy that can be effective for ADHD, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), family therapy, and art therapy.  Behavioral therapy helps patients learn how to manage their ADHD symptoms by teaching them different techniques for dealing with stress and distractions.

There are many different coping skills you can use to manage your symptoms and make your life easier. One of the newer methods for managing ADHD without medication is mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation helps patients learn how to focus on the present moment without judgment and to stay calm in stressful situations.

One of the biggest challenges for adults with ADHD is staying organized. There are a number of strategies you can use to help you stay organized, including using a planner, setting deadlines, and breaking tasks down into smaller chunks.  In addition, people with ADHD often have a hard time sticking to a routine, but it’s one of the most important coping skills for managing ADHD symptoms. Creating and following a routine can help you stay organized and on track, both mentally and physically.

Stress can aggravate ADHD symptoms, as well, so it’s important to find a stress-relieving activity that works for you. Some people find relief in exercise, others in meditation or yoga, and still others in creative activities like painting or drawing.  If you’re struggling to cope with your ADHD symptoms, it might be helpful to seek help from a therapist or counselor.
