Body Image Issues
If you are struggling with your body image, Summer is likely a very difficult time for you. The weather is nice and people tend to spend more time outside wearing more less clothing, including bathing suits. Summer can make those of us with body image problems feel self-conscious and uncomfortable. But you are not alone. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), “Over 90% of women are unhappy with their appearance.” And, unfortunately, this dissatisfaction often leads to body confidence issues and even full-blown body image problems. In this article, we will discuss body image problems and offer some tips for improving your self esteem and body confidence.
What is Body Image?
So what is body image, and how can you improve it? Your body image is how you think about yourself, your appearance, and your body. It is how you perceive your body, your self-image. It is how you view yourself in relationship to other people. It is your mental image of yourself. Body image is a very complex psychological process that is influenced by many factors, including your biological makeup, your gender, your culture, your family, your friends, your education, your beliefs, your emotions, your body type, and your environment.
Your body image is also a learned process, which means you can change it. You can learn to view yourself differently and learn to accept, or even love, your body. Body confidence can be learned.
What About Eating Disorders?
You often hear about eating disorders, but what about body image disorders? There are many people who suffer from body image issues. Some of them may be more severe and deep-rooted, while others are more temporary or situational. A body image problem can be anything from body dissatisfaction to full-blown body image problems.
